A man diagnosed with drug-induced mental conditions who slashed the neck and limbs of three people in Yuen Long has been sentenced to a hospital order for an unspecified period.

In handing down the sentence to Yeung Chi-tak, 40, District Court judge Timothy Casewell said there was a need to protect the safety of both the defendant and the public.

Yeung pleaded guilty to three counts of wounding with intent after he attacked a man in December and then slashed two women in March. He was arrested after passers-by took pictures of him and called security.

Yeung initially denied knowing his first victim, however it was confirmed that the pair did in fact know each other for 12 years. The defendant then recalled that his victim had sworn at him some 20 years ago.

He also recalled that one of the female victims had insulted him before he slashed their necks and shoulders.

Two psychiatrist reports ordered by the court recommended a hospital order after finding Yeung had schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions caused by his long term use of cough medicine, cocaine and methamphetamine, also known as ice.

He received treatment at Castle Peak Hospital from 2002 to 2014, when he was discharged.
